HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT: Bonnie and Clyde

This week on Hit me with your best shot, we looked at a bonafide classic – "Bonnie and Clyde". The entertaining film created 2 iconic characters, played by 2 of the biggest movie stars of their generation (Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty). The film also features an amusing supporting cast, all memorable characters in their own right (the entire Barrow gang was Oscar-nominated!). I initially didn’t remember "Bonnie and Clyde" for its cinematography, but it really is nicely lensed and well crafted. I had many shots to choose from. This is my 2nd time watching the film and I was again fascinated by the relationship between the title characters. Unlike many other films, this love affair was not founded on a sexual basis (although there was a lot of lust between the pair). My favourite shot therefore comes from a scene that highlights this.

My favourite shot comes from one of the best scenes in the film. Bonnie and Clyde are about to engage (or try to) in their first sexual encounter. The scene is mostly silent, but their actions speak clearly. As the audience braces for the expected steamy sex scene, we are thrown a curveball. To the shock of the audience and the impassioned Bonnie Parker herself, Clyde is unable to satisfy this specific need. Very rarely do we see the handsome action star fail to live up to the macho stud ideal. As the shot suggests, Bonnie must take solace in realizing that her ecstacy will have to be derived from criminal escapades. As she cuddles up beside her gun, Clyde reminds her...

"I told you I wasn’t no lover boy."

Later on, we see that he is actually somewhat capable in the sack. Bonnie stays by his side despite his limitations, thrilled by her wild new life. Of course, we all know how that worked out for her!
