COMING SOON: The Oscar Contenders

In case you weren't aware, the first phase of awards season is upon us, as the Venice and Telluride Film Festival are in full swing. Indeed, this is the most exciting time of year for any discerning cinephile, as some of the most anticipated films of the year will be premiering at various high-profile festivals. And already, various hot titles like "A Star Is Born" and "The Favourite" are positioning themselves as major Oscar contenders, with many more on the way. Of course, a lot can still happen between now and Oscar night. But for now, hope springs eternal as we await the rest of the year in "prestige" cinema. With that being said, here's a first look at some of the films garnering early Oscar buzz:

COMING SOON: The Oscar Slate

After a surprisingly strong summer at the multiplexes, it's once again time to turn our direction to the "prestige" films vying for Oscar consideration. But first, it's worth mentioning the contenders that have already been released this year.

During the same weekend that "Moonlight" scooped a shocking Best Picture win, Jordan Peele gave us an early preview of the next awards race with "Get Out". This horror-comedy opened to raves from critics and chart-topping box office numbers, with audiences praising its astute satire about race in America.

Towards the end of the summer, another film about race relations made its own Best Picture claims in the form of Kathryn Bigelow's "Detroit". But while some praised raw intensity of this true story, others criticized its depiction of brutality against African-Americans and questioned Bigelow's intentions as a white director.

With the bona fide "genre" style of "Get Out" and controvery surrounding "Detroit", it remains to be seen whether the Academy will ultimately embrace them. But there was one summer film that emerged with serious potential to go all the way. Namely, Christopher Nolan delivered another astonishing masterwork to his filmography with "Dunkirk", a truly nerve-wracking cinematic experience. You can expect Warner Bros. to pull out all the stops to get Nolan his first Best Director nomination to go along with a likely Best Picture nod.

Looking ahead, "Dunkirk" will surely face some stiff competition however, as evidenced by the reactions to the recent Venice and Telluride premieres. And in a few days, the Toronto International Film Festival gets under way with even more possibilities to consider. With so many Oscar hopefuls, it can be hard to keep track of the race. But if you dig deep enough, you can see the Best Picture field starting to take shape. With that in mind, here are the trailers for the major films to keep an eye on over the next 6 months:

COMING SOON: Toronto International Film Festival

For the third year in a row, I'm pleased to announce that I'll be attending the Toronto International Film Festival. As a member of the press I'll have prime access to all the screenings and events this wonderful fest has to offer. Be sure to follow me at The Awards Circuit, where I'll be posting all my coverage, including articles, interviews, reviews and more.

COMING SOON: Everything, Everything

After an uncharacteristically diverse slate of Oscar noms this year, Hollywood will be under close watch to see whether the trend will continue. Aside from "Get Out" however, things aren't looking so rosy in 2017. Films featuring black talent have been rare so far, but hopefully things will turn around as we head into the summer and fall. One promising release coming up in May is "Everything, Everything", based on a YA novel by the same name. On the surface, this story - about a sheltered girl falling dangerously for the boy next door - doesn't seem like much more than your typical sick teen romance. But with the underused Anika Noni Rose in the cast and Indie Spirit nominee Stella Meghie directing, there's definitely potential for a solid flick. Check out the trailer below:

"Everything, Everything" opens in theaters May 19th.

COMING SOON: I Am Not Your Negro

Fresh off its much deserved Oscar nomination, the best documentary of 2016 will finally be released to a wider audience next week. Directed by the great Raoul Peck, this incendiary work takes its cues from James Baldwin's unfinished novel "Remember This House" to tell the story of race in America. It's honest, frank and absolutely essential. Check out the trailer below:

"I Am Not Your Negro" opens in theaters February 3rd.

COMING SOON: Almost Christmas

Arriving in time to ring in the holiday season, David E. Talbert's "Almost Christmas" should provide some appealing counterprogamming to all the serious films opening this fall. In this comedy, a family comes together for Thanksgiving in the hopes that they can finally get along. With hints of "Soul Food" in its premise (they're brought together by the death of the matriarch), the film features a talented ensemble cast of woefully underused black actors like Kimberly Elise, Mo'Nique, Gabrielle Union. Check out the trailer below:

"Almost Christmas" opens in theaters November 11th.

COMING SOON: Toronto International Film Festival

September is officially upon us and for some lucky cinephiles it means one thing in particular...it's time for TIFF! In what I hope will be an annual tradition, I'll be heading back to the Toronto International Film Festival in just a few days for what will surely be another amazing experience. This year's lineup already feels like it's gonna be one for the history books and I'll be there to give you the lowdown on what's hot and what's not at this year's festival. Be sure to follow my coverage at The Awards Circuit. TIFF 2016 kicks off on Thursday, September 8th.

COMING SOON: The Oscar Slate

It's that time again! After an underwhelming summer at the movies (to put it mildly), Oscar season is here to bring us some relief. Indeed, aside from "Hell or High Water", "Indignation" or "Midnight Special", none of the early releases seem to have staying power for the long season ahead. Over the next few months, fall festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival (see ya there!) will launch a smorgasboard of "prestige" films on a hungry audience craving quality filmmaking. And the buzz has already begun as "La La Land" made a big splash at Venice this week. So strap in everyone, the race has begun. Here are the main upcoming Best Picture contenders to look out for:

COMING SOON: The Fits

Ever since its premiere at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, Anna Rose Holmer's "The Fits" has been quietly building acclaim along the festival circuit. Featuring a breakout performance by debut actress Royalty Hightower, the film has an intriguing premise about a young tomboy who tries to fit in with a dance troupe and soon notices they are plagued by a mysterious illness. From the looks of it, this could be one of this summer's indie gems. Check out the trailer below:

"The Fits" opens in theaters June 3rd.

COMING SOON: Ma Ma

As you'll see in a post I'm writing for tomorrow, there's a small foreign film I'm highly anticipating and it's called "Ma Ma". It stars Spanish acting giants Penelope Cruz and Luis Tosar in a heartrending story about a woman who finds renewed purpose in her life despite a devastating breast cancer diagnosis. You may know the film's director Julio Medem from his 2001 film "Sex and Lucia". All in all, it seems like a promising project, with strong talent behind and in front of the camera. Who knows, Penelope Cruz may sneak a Best Actress bid out of it. Check out the trailer below:

"Ma Ma" opens in theaters May 20th.

COMING SOON: Keanu

Those who know me are aware that I watch a lot of television. And on the small screen, two of my favorite personalities are Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the stars of the sketch comedy series "Key and Peele". I've been making my way through all the seasons of their show and they are absolutely two of the most talented comedians in the game. Which is why I'm excited for their upcoming film "Keanu". In it, the famously biracial actors will find themselves in unfamiliar territory as they try to find their beloved kitten (named Keanu), which may have been stolen by violent gang members. The trailer has been out for a while now and unsurprisingly, it makes me laugh every time. Check it out below:

"Keanu" arrives in theaters April 29th.

COMING SOON: Race

As you may recall, last year I had a chat with Stephan James at a TIFF party in his honor. While there we talked about his upcoming film "Race", which finally releases in theaters next month. In a potentially star-making performance, James will play legendary athlete Jesse Owens, depicting his record-setting feats at the 1936 Olympic Games. Now, I know the February release is cause for concern, but director Stephen Hopkins ("The Life and Death of Peter Sellers") has enough pedigree to keep me optimistic. I'm definitely rooting for this to be a winner. Check out the trailer below:

"Race" releases in theaters February 19th.

COMING SOON: Chi-Raq

By now you've heard of the infamous all-white Hollywood Reporter cover in honor of this year's Best Actress roundtable, an unfortunate reflection of the state of film in 2015. The truth is that there was a noticeable dearth of good leading roles for black actresses this year, save for "Tangerine". But Spike Lee may have the answer for that, with his latest film "Chi-Raq", starring the talented Teyonah Parris. In this modern, semi-musical take on the classic Greek text "Lysistrata", Parris leads the women of Chicago in a sex strike to rid the community of the never-ending cycle of gang violence. The film has already received strong reviews and I can't wait to see it. Check out the trailer below.

"Chi-Raq" releases in select theaters tomorrow (December 4th).

COMING SOON: Brooklyn

Yes, I know I already featured the "Brooklyn" trailer in last month's post, but this a special occasion. It's not often you get to see your review quoted on TV! Check out the new TV spot for "Brooklyn" below, and don't miss the film when it hits theaters on November 4th. It truly "invokes the spirit of the romance dramas of the Golden Age."

COMING SOON: The Oscar Slate

Is it just me, or did awards season come back around really quickly? It seems like just yesterday that "Birdman" was anointed with the Best Picture prize and now, a whole new batch of frontrunners have already emerged. From what we've seen already, "Inside Out" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" seem like they might have the support to go all the way and to a lesser extent, "Love and Mercy", "Ex Machina" and "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" are in the mix as well. But with many of the major prestige dramas to come, some of those early releases will inevitably fall to the wayside. With that in mind, here are the ones to watch out for this coming fall:

COMING SOON: Toronto International Film Festival

Over the next few weeks, cinephile excitement over the fall festival season will reach a fever pitch as we turn our attention towards the Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals. Yours truly will once again be in the thick of it, as I head up to the "Great White North" for the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival! With another exciting lineup of films in store, I'll be on the ground to provide you with my take on some of the hottest films. The atmosphere promises to be electric as the festival celebrates its 40th year.

Check out the festival teaser below and be sure to follow me at The Awards Circuit, where all my coverage will be posted.

COMING SOON: Straight Outta Compton

If there's one thing I know for sure, it's that there will never be a shortage of biopics. Next month however, there's one that looks like it may bring something different. F. Gary Gray's "Straight Outta Compton" will tell the story of the legendary group N.W.A, but it seems like it will be as much about the social climate of 1980s California as it is about the artists. Now, I'm hardly an aficionado of old school hip hop, but I'm looking forward to the performances from these virtual unknowns. Who knows, we might find our next breakout star. The film is already getting good early buzz, as the review embargo is being lifted very early (i.e. tomorrow). That's always a good sign. Check out the trailer below:

COMING SOON: Tangerine

One of the biggest stories out of Sundance this year was a little movie called "Tangerine", directed by Sean Baker. This Hollywood-set comedy follows a pair of transgender prostitutes on a mission to find the no-good pimp who's been cheating on one of them. The film garnered strong reviews after its premiere, but what makes it especially intriguing is not the story itself but the way it was shot. In true DIY style, "Tangerine" was shot on the iPhone 5! I don't know about you, but I'm hella excited for this one. It looks like it's gonna be so wild. Check out the raucous trailer below.

Tangerine storms into theaters July 10th.

COMING SOON: Dope

After an auspicious Sundance debut where the film won the Editing prize and secured a $7 million distribution deal, "Dope" will finally hit theaters next month on June 19. The film is directed by Rick Famuyiwa - known for 2 of the most well-known black films "The Wood" and "Brown Sugar" - and stars an exciting cast that includes Shameik Moore in the lead, as well Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori and Zoe Kravitz. The plot revolves around these youngsters as a group of hip hop geeks who become embroiled in an drug scheme. I can't wait to see what the fuss is all about. Check out the trailer below.

Dope opens in theaters June 19th.

COMING SOON: Noble

Heading to select theaters in a few weeks is a biographical drama called "Noble", directed by Stephen Bradley. It tells the story of Christina Noble, an inspiring Irish woman who overcame her own difficult childhood to help over 700,000 homeless children in Vietnam. The film has already racked up awards at various festivals across America, so it's definitely one to watch. I'm definitely intrigued by the cast, which includes Brendan Coyle, Liam Cunningham and Deirdre O'Kane as Noble . Check out the trailer below.

Noble opens in theaters May 8th.
