HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT: Orange is the New Black

Hit me with your best makes a small detour into the world of "television" this week, by looking at season 2 of the Netflix hit show "Orange is the New Black". Despite its serial format though, the season has been described as a "13-hour movie". I'll therefore treat it as such by choosing my favourite shot from the whole season, rather than individual episodes.

Click below for my favourite shot...

One of the most compelling aspects of this season was watching Piper's growth as a person. When we first met her she was uptight and self-centered, wallowing in self-pity. As she goes along this journey of incarceration however, she has become much more relaxed and accepting of her situation. This is particularly evident in the "40 OZ of Furlough" episode. After an awkward, temporary reacquaintance with her old life, she realizes how much she has changed. This leads to my chosen shot above. It's clear that this a new Piper, slumming it on the roadside with a "40" and a greasy burger.

  1. I love this shot too. I think it's a terrific example of the show's idea of prison being a system that bends people to its will, rather than vice versa. Piper's been so changed by prison that she practically seeks out confinement, even in the world outside the walls. Great post!

  2. Great pick! It really stands out since it's one of the widest landscape shots in the whole season. Everything else is so closed off. But even though she's in this moment of freedom, she's not even enjoying it. I thought it was really interesting how she almost seemed like she was coming home when she returned to prison.

This shot made me think about that actually. How she's out and about in NYC and the one place she is drawn to is a place where she can be surrounded by metal bars.
