TOP 10: Spotlight on Horror

In honor of October as the month of Halloween, I decided to venture into a genre that I don't normally gravitate towards - Horror. After enduring some frights, I've come up with another "Top 10" (check out my previous "Spotlight on Bollywood" post for your reading pleasure). A lot of fellow bloggers have been making similar lists and it made me realize I am still lacking in my knowledge of the genre. I admit, I still haven't seen classics like "Halloween" and "Carrie", but I enjoy my selected films enough to make this list.

TOP 10 FILMS
I know some of these films are more like "psychological thrillers", but I find them just as terrifying as the slasher flicks.

1. The Evil Dead
An audacious film with outrageous amounts of blood and gore to behold.

2. Psycho
One of the most tense and creepy films I've ever seen.

3. Let The Right One In
A chilling film that proves that sometimes, "less is more".

4. Paranormal Activity
I seriously couldn't sleep after watching this found footage film(especially since I went into it thinking it was an urban legend documentary).

5. The Ring
The images in this film haunt me to this day.

6. Aliens
Thrills and scares are abundant in this monster flick.

7. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
It may seem lite, but it's got some really dark undertones.

8. I Am Legend
Will Smith really showed the terror of loneliness(well, aside from the vampires) in a post-apocalyptic world.

9. 28 Days Later
Another stunning vision of the apocalypse, with some riveting scares.

10. Frankenstein
Fully delivers an early template for giving you the creeps.

TOP 10 SCARIEST CHARACTERS
These are the most frightening characters (human or otherwise) that I recall from horror movies.

1. Samara (The Ring)
When she was climbing out of the television, I actually moved backwards from my own tv screen.

2. Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist)
She takes vile and disgusting to another level.

3. Xenomorphs in the Alien Franchise
These scary creatures and their gross chestbursting gave me horrible nightmares.

4. Sharks (Deep Blue Sea)
Sharks are scary to begin, but with increased brain capacity? Get me to the nearest exit ASAP!!

5. The Thing (The Thing)
Eww, so gross.

6. Graf Orlok (Nosferatu)
His human-like form makes him so disturbing.

7. Jack Torrance (The Shining)
A dangerously unhinged madman.

8. Norman Bates (Psycho)
One of the creepiest performances ever. He really gets under my skin.

9. Rhoda Penmark (The Bad Seed)
This devil child will make you re-consider having children.

10. Seth Brundle (The Fly)
So gross it made me want to vomit.

  1. Great lists! Horror really isn't my thing, but I really like The Shining, Psycho, and Let the Right One In -- I'm glad you mentioned those. And I'll admit I found The Exorcist disturbing. :-)

  2. Superb lists for both categories! I would have to think on my own lists for these awhile but in my top 10 horror I would have to include The Descent and The Orphanage for sure. Check those out if you haven't yet!
